He earned his B.M. degree in piano performance and composition from Baylor University (US), and later he received a scholarship to further his composition study at the International Summer Academy Mozarteum Salzburg in Austria as well as attended the 44th International Summer Course for New Music Darmstadt in Germany with sponsorship. Subsequently he received his PhD in composition and music theory at Hong Kong Baptist University. He has prolifically composed more than hundreds works in different genres, and most of his works have been premiered at various international festivals, events, and venues throughout the North and South America, Europe, and Asia such as the International Festival of Modern Music "Kyiv Music Fest", the International Festival of Modern Art Two Days and Two Nights of New Music at the Odessa Philharmonic Theater, and the International Spring Orchestra Festival at the Manoel Theatre, etc. His music was performed by many international and local orchestras, ensembles, and choruses such as the Uzhgorod Philharmonic, the Khmelnytsky Philharmonic, the Chernivtsi Philharmonic, the Lugansk Philharmonic, the Opera Hong Kong Chorus, the Choral Fellows of the Harvard University Choir, Equinox Trio, MusicOrba, and the Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra, etc. His music is recorded on Albany Records (U.S.) and published by Edizioni Sconfinarte (Italy), Helm & Baynov Verlag (Germany), and Zimbel Press, etc. He has also received honors, awards and scholarships from different organizations including ASCAP, the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Council, the Macau Cultural Institute of SAR government, and the National Flute Association Newly Published Music Competition (U.S.), etc.. In addition, as a theorist his music theory papers were presented at international music theory conferences and published in scholarly book and peer-reviewed international journals. Apart from being mainly a composer and an academic, he is also active as a pianist and a conductor. In 2012, he is a full-time academic staff at the Cultural and Creative Arts Department at the Hong Kong Institute of Education.

Yus Musik wurde von vielen internationalen und regionalen Orchestern, Ensembles und Chören gespielt, darunter die Uschhoroder Philharmoniker, die Chmelnyzkyjer Philharmoniker, die Czernowitzer Philharmoniker, die Luhansker Philharmoniker, der Chor der Hongkonger Oper, die "Choral Fellows" des Chors der Harvard Universität, das Equinox Trio, MusicOrba und das Hongkonger Kammerorchester. Donald Man-Ching Yu ist zudem als Pianist und Dirigent aktiv und seit 2012 als Dozent am Hong Kong Institute of Education tätig.
